Technologies of Knowledge

An introduction to the history and theory of communications from papyri to pixels. With weekly “lab” sessions in Special Collections, students will explore manuscripts, codices and other media through a series of special projects and case studies.  The course, with its dual focus on media theory and histories of the book, will interest students of information science, literature, music, media, or history. Readings include McLuhan, Derrida, Kittler, Borgmann, Franklin, Gitelman, Vismann, Kirschenbaum, and Siegert.
